Is the DIB open?
Sorry, not yet!
Can I order bagels?
Again, sorry, but not yet! We have lots of work to do with building out our new space, and we wouldn’t want to sacrifice the quality of either the bagels we deliver now or the shop that we will have in the future. We know, a fresh bag of bagels during winter would be amazing, but so will a beautiful spot to make and buy them for the future.
What’s the DIB’s story?
Two brothers looking to quench the bagel desert of Detroit started the DIB from their Corktown flat in March of 2011. For the first few weeks, we sold our bagels as a fundraiser for the Downtown Synagogue. After witnessing how hungry Detroit was for bagels, we continued to hand-make traditional bagel varieties and added specialty bagel varieties (rosemary-olive oil-sea salt, blueberry ricotta, cherry chocolate, and bacon cheddar) from our flat.
After a few months of filling orders out of our house every day of the week, we needed a better distribution method to allow us time to plan for the future of the DIB. Thankfully, Eastern Market was starting their “Eastern Market Tuesdays“. Every Tuesday during the summer, we brought our bagels to market and sold out swiftly. This experience taught us how to batch up, and how much bagels are needed in Detroit.
We want to create a community space where Detroiters can get their bagel fix, have meetings with friends and associates, and show visitors excellence in bagel making. We recently found this space in Corktown on Michigan Avenue, and are in the process of building it out.
The DIB strives to create masterpieces in bagel craft. Each bagel is a work of art. And even though each bagel carries such prestige, it is still a bagel, achievable and eatable by anyone with a dollar and an appetite. Fine bagels for the masses!
